Gregg Heathcote Feature Article

How many times have you just walked around the University trying to get to class or the library and simply thought that you can’t wait to get away from those pesky mosquitoes and start your lesson

I must admit I have been one of those people on many occasions, believing the University to be a building that was erected on what I could only imagine was old swamp land. After all, where else could all those annoying mosquitoes have come from?

If only I had made the trip down to the Archives centre in the library earlier in my degree so I could have learnt firstly about the people who work on campus, but also the many interesting and diverse things they have done for the promotion and continuity of the University heading into its 50 year anniversary.

Gregg Heathcote is a name that I will now always remember fondly. Gregg is an archivist at the University who speaks excitedly and with great passion over the many achievements that the University has managed in its existence.

Gregg himself is an interesting case. He is not only a member of the Universities Archives team but is also a Shin Buddhist and chaplain at the University. He has also been responsible for many exhibitions and has contributed greatly to the University.

One thing that he is immensely proud of is his contribution towards a photo exhibition of Fungi on the Callaghan Campus.

“Back in 2010 we had a spectacularly successful photo exhibition of fungi on campus so that personally was extremely satisfying,” he said.

“It was exciting being able to connect with people and getting them enthused about wonders out there which were in full view but people would overlook,” which it must be said applied for this writer.

It is a classic case of looking around, but not really looking as you criss-cross the campus going about gaining a degree. A lot of students sadly don’t realise that there is much more to the University experience than simply gaining a degree.

“Not until you see the photos do you realise how spectacular they are. There is a variety of colours and forms. The fact that people were wowed by the pictures and they could see that they were all taken on campus, there are over 1,000 species and people were just blown away,” said Gregg with noticeable pride and passion in his voice.

Away from his Archiving duties Gregg is immensely proud of the work he has been able to do with people from all over the campus and for that fact the world through his chaplaincy work.

“When you’re on the University campus you are around people from all over the world. I feel immensely privileged to be able to meet and relate to the people I have met and make friends with the people that I have,” he said.

He speaks with deep personal satisfaction when he describes the feeling that he gets from helping people from very diverse countries and customs when they are acclimatising to life on campus at the University of Newcastle.

“There are a lot of people who come to the university and they have a lot of challenges, so just having a friendly face and someone to talk to can be incredibly important. When you can make a positive difference in someone’s life at a particularly important juncture in their lives it is immensely satisfying,” he said.

One story that Gregg told me really stood out as to what the University means to him and how his work has made a positive, meaningful difference in students’ lives.

He told me of an exhibition a few years ago which celebrated the contribution of gay and lesbian staff and students at the University. At the time a student was struggling with his own sexuality. Gregg picks up the story.

“I heard after we had that (The gay and lesbian exhibition) that one student who had come out to their family and been rejected by their family and was feeling suicidal was looking at the exhibition every day and it helped them get through a particularly tough time and a crisis in their life,” he said.

Gregg spoke of the happiness he himself had when finding out that something he and his colleagues had done made such an important difference in someone’s life.

“When you get feedback like that you know you have made a difference. Sometimes you don’t get clear feedback but when you do you feel really, really good.”

So if you haven’t made your way down to the archives centre, I suggest you do. It may just change your University experience for the better, maybe even your life.

By Shaun Dyas

News Story transcript

Intro: Newcastle University archivist Gregg Heathcote has spoken with great pride about the impact he has made in the life of students at the University as it prepares for its 50 year anniversary celebrations.

Shaun Dyas reports.

Voicer: University Archivist Gregg Heathcote is justifiably proud of the connection he has made with students from diverse backgrounds at the University as he prepares to assist in the celebrations of the Universities 50 years of existence.

Grab: “When you can make a positive difference in someone’s life at a particularly important juncture, it is immensely satisfying.”
